Alaska State Holidays
Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Alaska and start planning to make the most of your time off.
Alaska, like all states in the country, have recognized holidays, many of which are the same as recognized by the federal government. There are two holidays that are unique to Alaska, however.
The state celebrates Seward’s Day, commemorating the signing of the Alaska Purchase Treaty in 1867. It is named Seward’s Day as the treaty was negotiated by the Secretary of State at the time, William H. Seward. The state also celebrates Alaska Day which honors the anniversary of the transfer of Alaska from Russia after the purchase. Alaska Day is celebrated on October 18 and Seward’s Day is celebrated on the last Monday in March.
Although small villages and municipalities in Alaska may celebrate other holidays, there are no state sanctioned holidays that are unique to specific areas. On holidays celebrated statewide, most local, county and state offices are closed as well as many businesses in order to allow employees to enjoy the holiday with family.
