Florida State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Florida and start planning to make the most of your time off.

Florida celebrates all federal holidays, including President’s Day, Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day. On federal holidays, banks and public offices are normally closed. Public sector employees are paid on federal holidays, but private sector employers are not required to pay employees under state or federal law.

As in most states, if a holiday falls on Saturday, it is celebrated on Friday while Sunday holidays are celebrated on Monday.

Two holidays in Florida are unique to southern states in the country. Florida celebrates Confederate Memorial Day in order to honor the more than 260,000 soldiers who died fighting for the South during the Civil War. The holiday is celebrated on different dates throughout the South, but Florida celebrates on April 26.

Florida also celebrates the birthday of General Robert E. Lee who led the Confederate Army during the war on January 19. Because General Lee’s birthday is close to the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the two holidays are combined.
