Maine State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Maine and start planning to make the most of your time off.

Maine follows all holidays that are recognized by the federal government, including Martin Luther King Jr Day, Veteran’s Day and Columbus Day. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday is celebrated on Monday while holidays that fall on a Saturday are celebrated on Friday.

Maine and Massachusetts are the only two states in the country to celebrate Patriot’s Day. The holiday is celebrated in mid-April, normally around April 19, to recognize the patriots who fought for the country’s independence.

The first battles of the war were fought in the areas of Lexington and Concord, near Boston, Massachusetts, on April 19, 1775. One of the patriots recognized is Paul Revere whose famous “Midnight Ride” warned the colonists of the British invasion. Tennessee has also passed legislation to recognize Patriot’s Day, but it is not a holiday as it is in Maine. In Maine, state, county and municipal offices are closed and many schools are also closed.

Although the state does not require private employers to offer employees paid holidays, most employers in the state give employees at least seven paid holidays each year. In addition, many employers pay higher salaries on holidays in order to entice employees to work those days.
