Minnesota State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Minnesota and start planning to make the most of your time off.

Minnesota recognizes the same holidays that the federal government recognizes including Martin Luther King Jr’s Birthday, Labor Day and Christmas. If New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Veteran’s Day or Christmas falls on a weekend, the holiday is celebrated on either Friday or Monday, depending on the day of the weekend where the holiday falls. All other holidays are celebrated on the date established.

In Minnesota, the Executive Branch of state government does not receive Columbus Day as a paid holiday. The day after Thanksgiving is a paid holiday for the Executive Branch but the governor is given authority to declare that day a holiday for other branches of government as well.

Despite the fact that there are no laws requiring them to do so, many private employers do offer employees paid holidays as a benefit in Minnesota.
