North Dakota State Holidays
Discover upcoming public holiday dates for North Dakota and start planning to make the most of your time off.
North Dakota recognizes the same holidays that the federal government observes, including Independence Day Memorial Day and Labor Day. If New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Veteran’s Day or Christmas fall on a Sunday, they are observed the following Monday. If those holidays fall on a Saturday, they are observed on Friday.
In addition to federal holidays, North Dakota also recognizes Good Friday as a holiday. On the third Monday in February, North Dakota combines Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays into one holiday, celebrating it as President’s Day. The law allows the President of the United States and the Governor of North Dakota to designate additional holidays throughout the year.
In North Dakota, state offices are closed on legal holidays and state employees are paid for those holidays. The law requires that all state offices be closed by 12 Noon on December 24 if it falls on a regular workday.
There are no laws in North Dakota that require private employers to provide paid holidays to employees. However, many employers in North Dakota still offer paid holidays to employees as a benefit. Some also offer higher rates of pay if their business is open on a holiday in order to encourage employees to work on holidays or the employee is provided another paid day off at another time to compensate for having to work on a holiday.
