Fall 2024, 2025 and 2026

Autumn, or The Fall, comes to the US at the Northern Hemisphere’s Autumnal Equinox on 22 or 23 September. It runs until the coming of the Winter Solstice. Many, however, consider September, October, and November to be “the fall months” of the year. And there is yet another tradition whereby Autumn begins on Labor Day and ends on Thanksgiving Day.

Autumn is the time of year when schoolchildren return to school after summer vacation. Many families with school-aged children go on a final, short vacation on Labor Day Weekend just before or after school starts up again. Right after Labor Day, most swimming pools in the northern US close down for the season, while those further south may stay open until winter. Late fall marks the end of baseball season and the commencement of football season in the US, thus making it the transition point between two of America’s most popular pastimes.

Especially in the northern parts of the US, Autumn is well known for its spectacular colors. Whole forests of leaves change from green to reds, oranges, yellows, and browns just before turning into leafless “skeleton trees” for the winter. Also, many farmers harvest their final crops of the year in the fall.

In the South, many welcome the arrival of fall because it means an end to the oppressively hot summer temperatures. Hurricanes continue to be a threat throughout the fall along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Important Autumn holidays in the US include Columbus Day, Halloween, Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving Day.
