Vermont State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Vermont and start planning to make the most of your time off.

Vermont celebrates all holidays that are recognized by the federal government, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, state offices celebrate on Friday while Sunday holidays are celebrated on Monday.

Vermont celebrates Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 and Washington’s birthday on the third Monday in February rather than combining both for President’s Day. The first Tuesday of March is Town Meeting Day where citizens meet in about 40 towns across the state to discuss any issue. It also a day set aside to elect local officials, approve budgets and conduct other local business. A “warning” is issued to inform citizens when and where the meeting will be held as well as a list of topics that will be discussed and voted on at the meeting.

The third Saturday in June is Juneteenth National Freedom Day, commemorating the abolition of slavery. Bennington Battle Day, celebrated on August 16, commemorates the American victory over the British at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.

Although there are no laws requiring them to do so, many employers in Vermont offer paid holidays as a benefit to employees. Many employers have also added a bank of floating holidays that employees may use in place of other holidays in order to encourage more staff to work on holidays when the business must remain open.
