Virginia celebrates Lee-Jackson Day on the Friday preceding the first Monday in January in honor of Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson and Robert E. Lee, both generals of the Confederate Army. The third Monday in February is celebrated as George Washington Day.
The second Monday of October is celebrated as both Columbus Day and Yorktown Victory Day. The Battle of Yorktown as a turning point in the United States’ fight for freedom from the British. Virginia also recognizes the Friday after Thanksgiving as a holiday.
In addition to those recognized by the state, Virginia also celebrates holidays recognized by the federal government. These include Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January, Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. If a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is celebrated on Friday and a holiday on Sunday is celebrated on Monday.
