West Virginia State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for West Virginia and start planning to make the most of your time off.

West Virginia celebrates most federally recognized holidays including Independence Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day. The governor or the President of the United States may proclaim additional holidays throughout the year as well. Holidays that are not designated for a specific day of the week that fall on Saturday are celebrated on Friday while those that fall on Sunday are celebrated on Monday.

West Virginia celebrates the third Monday in February as President’s Day. On June 20, citizens of West Virginia celebrate West Virginia Day. The holiday celebrates the creation of West Virginia when several northwestern counties of Virginia seceded from the country during the American Civil War. Lincoln’s birthday is celebrated on the Friday after Thanksgiving rather than in February in West Virginia.

State offices are closed on holidays and state employees are paid for the time off. There is no law that requires private employers to offer paid holidays to employees. However, as a benefit to employees, most employers do offer paid holidays. Many also offer premium pay or additional days off during the year if an employee is required to work on a holiday.
