Wisconsin recognizes most federal holidays including Independence Day, Veteran’s Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On these days, schools and government offices are closed. In some cases, if the holiday falls on a weekend, it will be celebrated on either Friday or Monday. In addition, the governor or the President of the United States may authorize additional holidays throughout the year.
Good Friday, between the hours of 11 AM and 3 PM, is a holiday in Wisconsin. Citizens also celebrate Juneteenth day on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery. On the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November during even years, Election Day is a holiday in Wisconsin as well.
Although state employees are provided paid holidays, there is no law in Wisconsin that requires private employers to provide paid holidays as a benefit. However, Wisconsin employers recognize that offering paid holiday is a benefit most employees request. Therefore, many private employers in the state do offer paid holidays or higher wages if an employee must work on a holiday.
