Maryland recognizes the same holidays as the federal government. Additionally, Maryland celebrates American Indian Heritage Day each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. All state agencies, libraries and public schools are closed on American Indian Heritage Day.

Maryland’s Department of Licensing and Regulation oversees all legislation related to holiday pay for employees in the state. Maryland is what is known as a “no entitlement” state, much like many of the states in the country when it comes to holiday pay.
Nevertheless, most private sector employers in Maryland offer employees paid holidays as a benefit. Most employers recognize at least six holidays and pay employees if they close on those holidays.
