President’s Day 2024, 2025 and 2026
President’s Day is a public holiday in most US states, falling on the third Monday of every February. It is often still referred to as Washington’s Birthday and it takes its approximate date from Washington’s birthday. George Washington, the first US President, was born on 22 February. Abraham Lincoln, the second-most honored of all US Presidents, was also born in mid-February.

Some US states celebrate Washington’s Birthday or Lincoln’s Birthday, or both, separately from President’s Day. But many people view President’s Day as bringing to the national remembrance all US presidents, though with perhaps a special emphasis on George Washington who established the Union and on Abraham Lincoln who saved the Union.
Washington’s Birthday was made a national holiday in 1885, and it was observed on his actual birthday of 22 February. From 1971, however, the Uniform Monday Holidays Act set the date on the third Monday of February so as to guarantee a long weekend to the nation’s workers.
Most businesses in the US stay opened for President’s Day, though a few close down. Schools also tend to stay in session, but it is mandated that they teach children lessons concerning US Presidents and George Washington in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Although many older Americans still don’t like the date-change, it was hard-fought-for by many of the nation’s leading labor unions.
What do people do to celebrate President’s Day? First of all, there are many sales in stores that begin on this day – so it’s a huge shopping day. Also, there are military reenactments and other historically oriented events held all around the nation that many attend. Finally, it is typical for families and friends to get together for a feast or even a cookout on President’s Day, though it depends on the weather and the region.
