New Mexico State Holidays

Discover upcoming public holiday dates for New Mexico and start planning to make the most of your time off.

New Mexico does not have holidays that are different from the federal government. However, many areas of the state refer to Veteran’s Day as Armistice Day. Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays are combined and known as President’s Day which is celebrated on the third Monday in February. Columbus Day in New Mexico is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

State agencies and offices are closed on legal holidays and employees are given the days off with pay. Private employers are not required to pay employees for holidays even if the business closes. If the business remains open, the employer does not have to pay a higher rate of pay to employees who are required to work and does not have to offer the employee other days off to make up for working on a holiday. Although there is no requirement to do so, many New Mexico businesses do offer employees paid holidays.
