Ohio State Holidays
Discover upcoming public holiday dates for Ohio and start planning to make the most of your time off.
Ohio recognizes the same holidays as the federal government, including New Year’s Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day. The state combines Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays on the third Monday in February, celebrating it as President’s Day. If a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is celebrated on the preceding Friday while Sunday holidays are celebrated on the following Monday.
The Governor of Ohio is authorized to recognize any other holiday throughout the year. The afternoon of General Election Day, held the Tuesday after the first Monday in November during even years, has been declared a holiday. Offices and businesses may close between 12 Noon and 5:30 PM in order to allow employees the opportunity to vote. However, state law does not require those hours to be paid. This includes public employees unless they have a collective bargaining agreement in place that grants paid leave during those hours.
