Truman’s first public position was as a judge in Jackson County, Missouri. Later, he became a US Senator from his home state, and in 1944, he was elected Vice President. When FDR died in office in 1945, Harry Truman became commander in chief. He successfully led the nation through the final months of World War II, helped found NATO, and began action in the Korean War.
Truman was elected to a second term as president in 1950. Afterward, he returned to his native Missouri to found the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum.
On Truman Day, there are special educational emphases in Missouri schools on the history of Harry Truman and his presidency. There are also fundraiser dinners for the Democratic Party. And a “posthumous birthday party” is held for President Truman each year at the museum he founded.
