New York State Holidays
Discover upcoming public holiday dates for New York and start planning to make the most of your time off.
New York celebrates all federal holidays that are recognized by the federal government including Independence Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday. On these holidays, many businesses and offices are closed.
In addition to federal holidays, New York also celebrates holidays that are unique to the state. New York celebrates Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 and Washington’s birthday on the third Monday in February rather than combining the two as President’s Day. New York also celebrates Flag Day on the second Sunday in June. Flag Day is the only holiday that is not moved to Monday.
State employees are entitled to holiday pay when offices are closed for a legal holiday. Private employers are not required to provide paid holidays. Although there are no laws in place to require employers to offer paid holidays or to pay a higher rate of pay when an employee works on a holiday, many employers in New York offer both higher pay rates and paid holidays to employees as a benefit.
